Happy 1st Anniversary, Long Guan!
We’re pretty sure that coaxing confident smiles from Hong Kong-based lawyers and corporate professionals must seem like child’s play after snapping stoic poker players in Southeast Asia – and we definitely join you in your love of travel photography.
Learn more about Long in this Q&A below.
Where are you based?
Hong Kong
How many years have you been a photographer? (Not necessarily employed with Gittings)
Around 12 years, oh how time flies.
What is the most interesting photoshoot/subject you’ve ever photographed?
The most fun I’ve had as a photographer was a few years ago (pre-covid) when I used to follow a poker tour (hosted by PokerStars) and visit several southeast Asian cities every year. I was hired to photograph the live event in a documentary reportage style and though the years of following the tour, I was able to meet people from all walks of life.
What do you like most about being a photographer?
Flexible hours and the opportunity to meet people from all backgrounds.
Do you ever shoot with a film camera?
No
What is your favorite vacation destination?
Japan – Kyoto
How did you choose photography as an art form/career?
I’ve always enjoyed photography as a medium of expression ever since I was a teenager. After my first failed job out of university I wanted to explore photography fully since it was my main hobby at the time. Luckily during that time, I was able to meet and apprentice after another photographer that gracefully took me under his wing.
When did you know you wanted to be a photographer?
Probably a year or two after I started down this path.
What is your favorite aspect of portrait photography?
Meeting people and getting to hear their stories.
When you are not creating portraits for work, what kind of photography do you enjoy?
Can’t say no to travel photography and I love taking photos of my cat.
